20 Years - 20 Robots
Part 4
2007 - Rack 'n Roll
The Game:
Robots hang inner tubes of their alliance color on an
octagonal rack. Alliances earn bonus points for multiple
inner tubes of their color
in a row or column, like tic-tac-toe.
Our Robot:
Robot pic coming soon!
New and Interesting
Robots were allowed flexibility in their size and weight.
Heavier robots had to be shorter, whereas lighter robots
could be taller.
The Competitions:
Team 20 is in this video - we were on the red alliance.
Look for the robot marked with "20".
1305 teams competed in 37 regionals.
The Game:
Robots earn points by doing laps around a track.
Alliances can also earn points by hurdling a large
exercise ball over
a bridge.
Our Robot:
The winner of the Finger Lakes and Boston Regionals, and
a division semifinalist in Championships!
New and Interesting
The autonomous mode in Overdrive wasn't completely
autonomous. Teams were allowed to use a TV remote, with
up to 4 commands,
to control their robot.
Robots could only move around the field in one
direction, like in a racetrack.
The Competitions:
The Team 20 highlights reel from the Boston Regional.
1508 teams competed in 41 regionals.
The Game:
Each robot had a trailer attached to it. The objective
of the game was to put balls ("moonrocks") in opponent
trailers.
Our Robot:
New and Interesting
The field was covered with a slick surface called
"regolith", and all robots were required to use wheels
that slipped on
the regolith. The result was a low-traction environment
for all robots.
Also, Lunacy had a very minimalist field design - other
robots were the game pieces.
The Competitions:
The Team 20 highlights reel from the Granite State
Regional.
1677 teams competed in 43 regionals.
2010 - Breakaway FIRST
The Game:
A soccer-like game, except with bumps dividing the field
into thirds. In order to get from one part of the field
to another,
robots had to either traverse the bumps or go under a
low tunnel, making offense-midfield-defense play
logical.
Also, there are 2 goals per side and 12 balls, up from
the traditional 1 and 1, respectively. For a more
detailed description
of the 2010 season, visit our
2010 page .
Our Robot:
The WPI Regional winner, and a division semifinalist at
Championships!
New and Interesting
An innovative field management system kept automatic score
and made returning scored balls into play easy.
The Competitions:
Team 20 in the semifinals at WPI (and getting stuck on top
of a soccer ball).
1811 teams competed in 43 regionals.
